Dubuque Democratic Herald – Aug. 9, 1864

Bound Over – The examination of Daniel McLaughlin, who was arrested Saturday by Sheriff Mahoney, took place yesterday before Justice Welch. It was proven that he hit Constable Mace on the head with a stone and resisted the officers in discharge of the duty. On the first charge he was found guilty and bound over in the sum of $800 for his appearance at this term of District Court, and like a punishment for the second offense, the first one being assault with intent to commit great bodily harm, and the second one resisting an officer in the discharge of his duty. His accomplice has not yet been apprehended. Both person are named McLaughlin and were raised by D. Burke, of Garry Owen, and for the last two years have been following steam boating. They have therefore borne a good reputation but when rum is in wit is out, which caused them to tear about as if mad, and assault all who came in their way, especially a quiet peaceful official like Mr. Mace, who is never ever bearing in the discharge of his duties, and gives a prisoner considerable lenity. Mr. Mace was present as a witness, and will soon be on duty again.
