Dubuque Democratic Herald – Oct. 6, 1863

RUNAWAY-There was a frightful runaway yesterday afternoon shortly after 5 o’clock. Mrs. Markall, wife of H. Markall, the banker, and her two children, with Mrs. Wm. P. Brackett and child, when coming down Julien Avenue the animal became frightened by the buggy running on his heels on account of the harness not being fastened right, when he started at full speed down the hill, running over a hog and killing him instantly, before reaching Bluff Street. Mrs. Markall held the reins and managed the horse admirably. She kept him on down 8th Street in the middle of the street, until the corner of Clay was reached, when Mrs. Brackett to aid her, took hold of one rein, turned the horse up Clay Street when the three children were thrown out. The ladies wisely kept their seats, turning the horse up this street and down that until he had about enough of his “runaway,” and finally stopped near the Bluff, out of breath. The children were bruised somewhat, but luckily no bones were broken. It was indeed surprising that there were no more serious result concerning the distance travelled and the speed attained.
