The Dubuque Herald – Jan. 6, 1882

John McLaughlin, night messenger for the Western Union Telegraph Company, has been appointed to the position of night operator at the Illinois Central Depot. Johnny is one of the best boys ever connected with the telegraph office, and the Herald corps can attest to his worthiness and faithfulness. He has learned telegraphy at midnight, and has honesty and assiduously worked his way to the position as a full-fledged operator.
