OUR NEXT NINE
~
Dubuque Will Have the Strongest
Base Ball Club in the West
~
Dubuque is early in the field for her nine of the season for 1879, but none too early to secure a club that will do honor to the metropolis of Iowa, and lay out the base ballers of Davenport. Burlington and other small towns in the west, who have been telling of the wonderful things they intend doing, and how they would get away with Dubuque’s next season.

The Dubuque Association has secured five of Peoria’s best men - the two Gleason’s, who last season played short stop and third base, Loftus, second base, Radburn pitcher, and Alvretta, center field. Besides these we have L. P. Ries, who filled the position of change pitcher for the Chicago White Sox’s last season. Of Mr. Ries, the Chicago Times says: “A better selection couldn’t have been made. There are not three men in the country of his age could do as effective work.” He will of course, pitch for the Dubuques. Mr. T. Sullivan has been engaged as catcher. He is one of the Bedfords, and made a record last season, second to none in the west, or the east for that matter. Messrs. Comisky and Ross have been retained.

At the Rockford meeting it was resolved that a Northwestern League, composed of Rockford, Dubuque and Peoria, be formed, and invite Davenport, Milwaukee, Cedar Rapids and Marshalltown to join. The officers of the league are: Jas. F. McKee, of the Rockfords, president: W. E. S. Bunn, of the Peorias, vice-president: T. P. Sullivan, of the Dubuques, secretary and treasurer. The rules of the National League were adopted; also the Spaulding League Ball. At the adjourned meeting to be held April 1, a constitution and by-laws will be adopted.
