Dubuque Daily Herald – Oct. 2, 1866

SEVERE ACCIDENT-Another warning to those who will persistly indulge in Sabbath breaking was given yesterday. A young man eighteen years of age, by the name of B. Ragatz, who had for a long time employed in the furniture store of V. Herancourt, went up the river in a small boat duck hunting last Saturday. He saw a duck, and in his haste to shoot, the trigger caught in some manner on the side of the boat, when the gun exploded, lodging a charge of buckshot in his jaw and lacerating the whole side of his face in a fearful manner. He now lies in critical condition at his father’s residence, back of the Tivoli gardens, and the chances are that he will not recover. He is spoken of as a promising and worthy young man, who has always borne a good reputation, and the unhappy occurrence is deplored by a large circle of friends.
