Frank Strandberg, a blacksmith, awoke Monday morning at 5:15 o’clock to find is home, 856 Southern Avenue, in flames. An alarm was sent in but before the department could get a stream on the on the burning house it had been almost completely destroyed.

Strandberg has absolutely no idea of the origin fire, which may have started from a chimney fire during the night and a defective flue. Strandberg awoke a little before his usual time and found the room filled with smoke. He got up and opened the door and found the kitchen in flames. He awoke his wife and then hurried to a neighbor’s and sent in an alarm by phone. Number 3 engine, Fourth Street, and Number 5, Hose Company, on the hill, responded to the alarm. They found it necessary to lay some 2,100 feet of hose and by the time a stream of water was on the fire the home had been almost completely destroyed.

Strandberg and his family were taken and cared for by neighbors. Except for the clothing they had ready to don in the morning they saved but little of their clothes and only a small amount of their furniture was saved through the assistance of their neighbors.

The home was a single story cottage which Strandberg owned himself. His insurance will only partially cover his cost which amounts to $800 or $900 dollars.
