Cause of Accident

Mrs. Leo L. Robinson, 511 West Eighth Street, is in Mercy Hospital suffering from dangerous injuries in an accident in which her husband and other women from Dubuque also received minor wounds late Friday evening near Gays Mills, Crawford County, Wis.

Mr. Robinson, who is a picture machine operator and general managerial assistant at the Majestic theatre, accompanied by, besides himself his wife, Miss Marie James and Mrs. Marie Maher, the latter also an employee at the Majestic drove to Gays Mills Friday. Miss James is connected with the Lew Rosenthal Booking Agency, had business in the little Wisconsin town, and with the Robinsons and Mrs. Maher combined the errand with an outing.

Leaving Gays Mills about 6 o’clock Friday evening, the party in a small car owned and driven by Mr. Robinson, negotiated the long and steep hill to the west, arriving almost at the summit, when the engine stopped. Mr. Robinson applied the brakes; they proved inadequate to hold the vehicle on the steep incline. The machine started backwards at a high rate of speed. Mr. Robinson realizing the danger to all occupants turned the rear of the car into an embankment. It struck with such force that it bounded into the air and turned completely over, throwing Miss James and Mrs. Maher, who occupied the back seat, out upon the ground.

Mr. and Mrs. Robinson were pinned beneath the car. Mrs. Robinson’s feet were plunged through the windshield, causing compound fracture of her left ankle, the glass almost severing the foot at the point of bone break.

Medical assistance was obtained from Gay Mills. Miss James returned to Dubuque on an early train Saturday. Mrs. Robinson was brought to Dubuque Saturday afternoon arriving here about 4 o’clock on the Milwaukee. She was removed immediately to the hospital. Other members of the party are able to be around, though nursing various injuries.

The extents of Mrs. Robinson’s injuries are as yet unknown.
