When he was 15 years old, Matthias moved with his parents from his native Tennessee to Missouri. For a short time around 1827, he was in the area that would become Dubuque then in Illinois and Wisconsin until about 1833 when he came back to the Dubuque area and settled permanently. In 1836, he was enumerated in Dubuque on the census of Iowa. Matthias worked as a miner. He laid out the Ham's Addition of Dubuque.

He married Miss Z. Marklin in 1837. They were the parents of five children: Lews Ann, Thomas, Jane, Sarah and Kate. Mrs. Ham died in February 1855. Five years later, Matthias married Margaret McLean with whom he had two children, Mathias and May, before Margaret's death in 1874.

In 1880, Matthias was enumerated on the federal census in Dubuque as a 75-year-old white male farmer who had been born in Tennessee as were his parents. Others in the household were two daughters (Sarah, age 27; and Maggie May, age 16), a son (Matthias, age 18) and a boarder (Jane White, age 65).
