DEATH IN A WRECK
~
ENGINEER STEWART OF THE
GREAT WESTERN KILLED
~
Runaway Locomotive Causes a Fatal
Wreck Three Miles South of
Hayfield, Minn., Yesterday Morning
Engineer Stewart, The Dead Man,
Was a Resident Of Dubuque
~
About 5 o’clock yesterday morning a wreck occurred on the Great Western three miles south of Hayfield, Minn., in which Alexander Stewart, of this city, was killed, and a firemen whose named could not be learned, was fatally injured.

The particulars of the accident, as near as can be learned, are as follows: A crew of a switch engine used at the yards at Hayfield, left the engine standing on the track at that place and went into a restaurant at that place at 5 o’clock yesterday morning. The engineer, supposed he had closed the throttle and that the engine was stationary. The crew had been in the restaurant but a short time when they were startled by hearing the engine start. Upon rushing out they were horrified to see the engine going south at a high rate of speed. They knew that the north bound passenger was but a few miles away and that a collision was inevitable, but nothing could be done. The runaway engine continued its mad flight to about three miles south of Hayfield when it crashed into the north bound passenger which left Dubuque at 12 o’clock.

The engineer of the passenger train was Alexander Stewart of this city, and he was instantly killed. The fireman was caught among the wreck and received injuries that will in all probability prove fatal.

Both engines were badly wrecked, and the coaches on the passenger were also wrecked. As far as known none of the passengers were injured. The name of the injured firemen could not be learned.

Engineer Stewart, the dead man, is a Dubuquer and resided on Twenty-Sixth Street and Couler Avenue. He leaves a wife and two small children.
