WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN DIDN'T STOP IN DUBUQUE
William Jennings Bryan did not stop in Dubuque as he was advertised to do. As the grey streaks of dawn were coming over the eastern hills, the peerless one speeded through Dubuque in his couch on a Pullman sleeper. Dubuque Democrats were disappointed, as they expected him to give them a rear end platform speech.
Mr. Bryan and party left Chicago Tuesday night shortly after midnight on the Chicago Great Western, headed for Omaha. Accompanying the peerless leader were his wife, son and daughter and his Nebraska admirers. Dubuque Democrats are alarmed over Mr. Bryan's insistence on kicking Roger Sullivan out of the party. They look upon his reiteration of his reasons for Mr. Sullivan's retirement as one of the worst blunders the silverite has yet made. Then his government ownership of railroad doctrine bids fair to drive hosts of his friends in this part of Iowa out of the party, many Democrats looking upon his expression as a spasm of a populist.
Mr. Bryan has been asked to take part in the Iowa Democratic campaign, but so far has not given the state central committee a definite answer. It is hoped to get the peerless leader to make six speeches during October. Dubuque is one of the cities that is scheduled for the appearance of the Nebraskan.
