HON. WM. E. LEFFINGWELL
The democracy of the second congressional district of this State, honored itself as well as its nominee, in selecting Hon. Wm. E. Leffingwell as its candidate for Congress- This action looks very much as though the object was success and with success, the election of a man who would be an honor to Congress and to the North West.
Our candidate is one of the ablest orators in the North West. In his profession of the law he has been eminently successful. In political life, the post of honor has been to him the private station. But in both law and politics, he ranks by common consent, among the foremost men of our times.
These are the times when conservative masses everywhere are calling to their assistance-statesmen, orators, and scholars. The feeling usually prevails now that neither public business nor private matters, can be allowed as an excuse for any man’s refusing to obey the people’s call. Could Mr. Leffingwell have consulted his own feelings in this matter, the nomination so unanimously tendered, would have declined. But loving his country, and comprehending its perilous condition, he is willing to make the canvass trusting that the people who have so much at stake in this issue, will rally around him in position where his influence may be thereafter the white man’s supremacy, and the white man’s liberty.
Iowa will be proud of Leffingwell in Congress. The whole North West would point to him as one of her most prominent sons. And with his broad and national views upon the great questions which are agitating the public mind. He would command the respect and esteem of the American people.
Mr. Leffingwell can be elected if the right spirit is evinced. If those whose interest it is to have Leffingwell elected will work for this result, the issue will not be doubtful.
Now friends of the constitution and the law, you have one of the noblest champions of both in the Democratic candidate for Congress. Do not by inactivity or apathy, allow him to be slaughtered. Extend to him that earnest, hearty support everyone promised, and he can be elected.
Our candidate asks for you to do but part of the work. He proposes to thoroughly canvass this district, and give the people an opportunity to learn his views so they may vote understandingly.
Let the Democracy and conservative people of the Second Congressional District pull together in this campaign and nothing in the future is more certain than the success of our ticket. Let us at once set the ball in motion, and keep it in motion until the polls shall be closed on the night of the Third of November.
