January 25, 1872OUR SENATOR.
From our exchanges we glean the following facts, connected with the Hon. W. B. Allison, whose recent election to the United States Senate for six years, from March 4th, 1873, makes him an object of especial interest to our people. W. B. Allison was born in Wayne county, Ohio, March 2d, 1829; is thus nearly forty-three years of age. He is a graduate of Western Reserve College and studied law at Wooster, Ohio. He came to Dubuque in the spring of 1857. In the fall of 1862 he was elected to congress, and continued to represent his District by re-election until the 4th of March of last year. He then gave place to his successor, Mr. Donnan.
Mr. Allison is one of those men who live to make ridiculous the first estimates of them. While the envious of the undiscerning still talk of them as “third rate men,” they have worked and grown quietly on until they are the peers of the strongest and then the frank part of the public admit that their estimate was a mistaken one; of the envious no change of assertion is to be expected, as no decency or fairness is expected of them. But Mr. Allison has been unquestionably one of the foremost members of the Congress just closing. He has made national reputation as a legislator. He is strong in debate a fine Parliamentarian, active in thought and ready in speech. Has a thorough knowledge of public affairs and the work of legislation. In his personal character as a gentleman and as a public servant, in his abilities, experience, unfailing courtesy to all, thorough knowledge of public affairs, and sound political views, he is a man fit to represent the Republican party and the State of Iowa in the United States Senate.
