Howard Tilton Smith, a popular native son and successful young business man of Manchester, is the proprietor of the Clarence Hotel, which he has conducted continuously during the past six years, and also acts as manager of the H. C. Smith Drug Store. His birth occurred on the 23d of March, 1885, his parents being Henry C. and Harriett (Tilton) Smith, the former a native of Richland township, this county, and the latter of Dubuque county, Iowa. Henry C. Smith, born May 4. 1856. was actively engaged in the drug business at Manchester for many years and is now living retired. His entire life has been spent in Delaware county, and he enjoys an enviable reputation as one of its esteemed and representative citizens.
To him and his wife have been born five children, as follows: Howard Tilton, of this review; Mildred, now Mrs. George Mernitz of Chicago; Glenn, who is a mail carrier in Manchester; and Kate and Harry, both at home. In the maternal line our subject is related to the Cowles family.
Howard T. Smith acquired his education in the public schools, completing the high school course at Manchester in 1904. Subsequently he worked in his father's drug store for three years and on the expiration of that period entered the Highland Park College of Pharmacy at Des Moines, pursuing a pharmaceutical course and passing the examination of the state board in 1907. On the 17th of August, 1908, he bought out the Clarence Hotel and has since conducted the same along modern and up to date lines, making it a very popular and attractive hostelry. He is likewise the manager of the H. C. Smith Drug Store, known as the Hotel Drug Store, which is accorded a most liberal patronage. Both as hotel proprietor and store manager Mr. Smith has proven himself a young man of enterprise and excellent business ability who well merits the prosperity which has already come to him.
On the 11th of September, 1907, Mr. Smith was united in marriage to Miss Florence Wilson, of Manchester, Iowa, her parents being Harry J. and Ida (Griffith) Wilson, residents of this county. The father is the well known proprietor of the Lovell Hotel at Monticello, Iowa. Our subject and his wife have three children: Henry Wilson, Howard T., Jr., and Harriet Ida. Mr. Smith is a republican in his political views. Fraternally he is identified with the Knights of Pythias, is a Knight Templar and belongs to the Mystic Shrine at Cedar Rapids. He is widely recognized as a young man of energy, ambition and enterprise whose continued success is assured.
