After posting a bio from the book PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF DUBUQUE, JONES AND CLAYTON CO. IOWA, Pg. 510 about George Haberkorn, I received the following e-mail which contained corrections to that article. Since these corrections are important to the Haberkorn family I am posting them also and help researchers connect the two posting. I have since corresponded with Mr. Vernon Haberkorn and found he has published three fascinating books on the Haberkorns of Dubuque County. The correcting e-mail is as follows:
Hello Mary Durr
I was interested in seeing if my great grandfather George Haberkorn was listed. I found that he is. After reading the article I find several erroneous reports. Here are the correct answers. His mother was Eve Rubner, not Renbener. Adam & Eve, George's parents, did not spend their entire lives in the fatherland. They arrived in Dubuque, Iowa in August 1844. George and 2 daughters came with them. The article says George worked as a farm laborer then four years with Steger Mines. Adam and George both immediately worked at the Steger mines for 4 years. The article says he worked for Mr. Sherrill and Mr. Leonard for 3 yrs. After working in the mines 4 yrs., he went to Dubuque to work. Here is where he met Thresia Lang, whom he married October 22 1852. He then, with his new wife, moved back with his parents at Sherrill and started working the quarter section of land that Adam had bought for $4.00 an acre. George later added 80 acres to the 160 acres making it 240 acres. I know corrections probably can not be made or changed. However I thought I would relay the true story to you since you published the article. I have written 3 different Haberkorn Family histories and have records of their history.
All are buried in the Catholic cemetery in Sherrill, Ia.
