John (Jack) H. Shaeffer, 65, of 2501 Avenue C, Scottsbluff, Nebraska, died at his home early Saturday morning, April 22, following a lingering illness.

He was born November 26, 1895, at Edina, Mo., and graduated from Edina High School. He attended business school at Kansas City, Mo. He moved to Claremore, Okla., then to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he began managing department stores.

October 21, 1924, he was married to Gertrude Jeppson at Milford. They moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, then to Breckenridge, Texas. Later they moved to Spencer, Iowa, where he was associated with the Bee Hive Department Store. He then joined the Burr Department Store Chain at Aberdeen, South Dakota, and was transferred to Scottsbluff in 1932, where be became manager of the Burr Department Store.

In 1937, he became an independent oil land leaser for the Banner Oil company. He also was a clerk at the Emery Hotel.

Organizations to which he belonged included the Methodist Church at Milford, Iowa; Masonic Lodge of Wichita, Kansas, and the Oregon Trail Chapter No. 65 of Royal Arch Masons in Gering.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; three brothers, Frank of Wichita, Kansas; Ed of Pittsburgh, Penn., Will of Fairbanks, Alaska; two sisters, Mrs. Louise McCalanhan of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Margaruite McCoy of Edina, Mo. All the brothers and Mrs. Frank Shaeffer attended the services.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, April 26, in the Leyson Funeral Chapel at Milford with the Rev. John R. Kirby of Union Memorial Church officiating. Interment was made in the Milford Cemetery.
