Spirit Lake Beacon

HALES. In Spirit Lake, February 7,
James Hales, aged 58 years.

Troubles of war and of peace are over for this old soldier. He did his duty as best he could, made many friends and lived uprightly in the sight of God and man. Sickness had for some time held him in remorseless grasp. Serious lung difficulty, heart trouble and still other ills of the flesh made life a burden.

The deceased was born in New York. In 1879 he married Phoebe L. Davis, the beloved wife who died just a year ago. Before coming here in 1882 he lived a year or so at Parkersburg, in Butler county. For more than eighteen years he was a resident of this community, where he leaves many friends. His only relatives in this county are an uncle and several cousins in Milford township. Ed. Hales, a brother living at Britt, will arrive this morning.

Funeral services will be held at the Episcopal church at two o'clock this afternoon. The burial will be in charge of Winget Post, G. A. R., of which the deceased was a respected member.
