The following obituary was in the Spirit Lake Beacon on 3 February 1916:

FORMER RICHLAND TOWNSHIP RESIDENT SUFFERS FOR SEVERAL MONTHS

"Mrs. John H. Michael, who has been a sufferer for several months, died at her home in Terril on Sunday, January 30th, age 47 years, 6 months and 28 days.

Loretta Peterson was born in Chickasaw county, Iowa, July 2, 1869 (note: should be 1868). She was married to John H. Michael, February 27, 1886, at Charles City. They spent about three years in the vicinity of Charles City, after which they moved to Dickinson county. For several years they occupied a farm in Richland township, and about one year ago they moved to Terril, which has since been their home.

Eleven children came to bless this home, six boys and five girls, nine of whom, together with the father are left to mourn her untimely death. They are Ercel Michael of Watertown, S. D., Mrs. Amy Hardy of Eufoula, Okla., Mrs. Nellie Cruse of Terril, Ia., Mrs. Grace McNeal of Rock Creek, Minn., and Arthur, Ethel, Lloyd, Fern, and Cecil at home. Besides the immediate family circle she leaves three brothers, W. E. Peterson of this place, Joe Peterson of Watertown and Trueman Peterson of Madena, N. D., also two sisters, Mrs. A. Beard of Waverly, Kansas, and Mrs. Jim Michael of St. Joe, Mo.

All the children were present at the funeral with the exception of one daughter, Mrs. Hardy of Oklahoma, also Fred Stratman, a brother in law and daughter, Miss Lucile of Bayard, Iowa, were in attendance at the funeral.

Mrs. Michael has been a sufferer of Heart trouble for some time but was able to be about the house until about five weeks ago when she was taken with grippe and has been confined to her home since.

Mrs. Michael was a woman who devoted her life to her home and children she was a kind lovable woman ever mindful of those dear to her. She will be greatly missed in the home circle and amongst her best of friends."
