Hayward. At Beatrice, Nebraska, March 13th, 1906, George Hayward, age 80 years.
He “came to his death at full age, like a shock of corn cometh in its season,” but all too soon was the death of this good man. Spirit Lake knew him many years; knew him as an honest, kindly modest man doing good and no harm. Aspiring not to place, or power he did his duty every day and his gracious presence and genial way made him welcome everywhere, The son and daughter surviving may well revere his memory as they look across the years of his clean and helpful life.
George Hayward was born in Leeds, England, November 5, 1835. In Staffordshire, in 1850, he married Miss May Preen, for more than fifty years his faithful and beloved companion. In 1857 the family came to Quebec, then to Toronto, and in 1861 settled in Missouri. Answering a call from the governor of the state he enlisted in the service of his very recently adopted country, and after six months was sent home to die. A little later a home was made at Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and then at Red Oak, where the family lived until 1882, when a residence was taken up in Spirit Lake. In company with his son William he bought the Minne Waukon hotel. Until the death of his wife four years ago, Father Hayward continued to abide here, but since has had a home with his daughter, Mrs. Helen Geddes, at Beatrice. He was in fairly good health in is advanced years until a few months ago and has since gradually faded out of life. The son who has contributed so much to his comfort all through the years went to his bedside a few weeks since, but the light of intellect until so recently so bright had gone out. A week before the end which could not be definitely foreseen, the grandson, Joseph, went to Beatrice, and on Wednesday returned with the tired body now forever at rest. Brief services at the cemetery were held by Rev. E. W. Brown, in the presence of relatives and friends. Peace to the gentle spirit of George Hayward.
