CIVIL WAR VETS IN CHARGE OF SERVICES
FOR MAN WHO CAME HERE IN 1857Members of the GAR had charge of the services at the funeral at 2:30 p.m. today of John J. Schlawig, 85, Sioux City pioneer who died Saturday from senility. Dr. Wallace M. Hamilton, pastor of the First Presbyterian church officiated. Burial was in Floyd cemetery.
Services were held at the home of Mr. Schlawig’s daughter, Mrs. P.A. Patch 2324 Douglas street, with whom he lived since the sale of the family homestead at Sixth and Nebraska streets. Pall bearers were selected from his civil war comrades.
Mr. Schlawig was born in Switzerland and had lived in Sioux City for 62 years. He is believed to have lived longer in this city and to have witnessed more of the growth than any other man. He built the first wagon and the first carriage ever manufactured here.
Surviving are a son Dr. William M. Schlawig of Monument, Colorado, three daughters Miss Anna Schlawig, Mrs. R.E. Caniff and Mrs. C.A. Patch all of this city; two grandsons John R. and Arthur P. Patch and one granddaughter Miss Anna Marie Caniff.
