ORAN HOPKINS PASSED AWAY TUESDAY
Oran Hopkins, a seventy-eight year old Civil war veteran, who has made his home with Mr. And Mrs. Will Ecker the past eight years, passed away Tuesday morning. His remains were taken to Elgin, his former home, for burial the same day. Mr. Hopkins’ many friends grieve at his passing.
From the Elgin Echo, Thursday, December 13, 1923 : "O. N, Hopkins Dies. O. N. Hopkins, who lived in Elgin about eight years ago, died in West Union, Tuesday morning at the home of Will Ecker. Mr. Hopkins was veteran of the Civil War and at the time of his death was seventy-eight years of age. He was a widower with no living children, and so far as we know he has no living relatives, O. N. Hopkins was born at Washington, Wisconsin, In 1845. He enlisted on January 17, 1862, !n Co. I, Seventh Iowa Cavalry and received his honorable discharge on January 20, 1865. The body of Mr. Hopkins was brought to Elgin Tuesday. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church today (Thursday) and the body was laid to rest in the Elgin cemetery."
