Margaret Marna Jeanne (Mills) Scott, 96, of Burlington died peacefully in her sleep in Friday, March 17, 2017, at New London Specialty Care where she was temporarily staying while recovering from the flu.
Marna was born April 22, 1920 to Fred P. Mills and U. Erma White Mills. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1938, attended Knox College (Galesburg, IL), and graduated from Brown's Business College (Galesburg, IL) in 1941. On May 22, 1945 she was united in marriage to Chester Anthony Scott in Burlington, IA. She worked at the Iowa Ordnance Plant, National Research, and as a journeyman printer with The Hawk Eye newspaper, retiring in April 1990.
Music was one of Marna's great loves. She sang with the Silver Singers for several years and supported the Civic Music Association and Southeast Iowa Symphony. She encouraged her children and grandchildren to share this love as they joined vocal and instrumental groups in high school, college, military, church and other musical groups, attending as many of their performances as possible. Other interests included dancing, reading, card games, genealogy, history, government and politics.She was also active in other civic groups including Knox College Fifty-Year Club; Delta Zeta Sorority, Alpha Iota Sorority, and a former member of Burlington Typographical Union #75, Rebeka Circle of King's Daughters, Des Moines County Genealogical Society, Des Moines County Historical Society, League of Women Voters, Fulton County, IL Genealogical and Historical Society, YWCA Queenagers, R.S.V.P. Silver Singers, and Carthage Lake Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband Chester in 1994, her parents, brother Fred Jr. in infancy, son Gregory, one step-grandchild and one great-grandchild.
