Nancy N. Neafie

Nancy N. Neafie, 61, 906 ½ N. Fifth St., Burlington, died at 2:40 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 1993 at Burlington Medical Center.

Born Feb. 18, 1932, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of Walter Garrett and Nellie Blackmar Jones Neafie.

Ms. Neafie was an instructor at Southeastern Community College, where she taught western civilization and Asian history since 1983. Prior to that she taught at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., the Berlitz School of Languages in Tokyo, Japan and the University of Iowa.

She was affiliated with the Congregational and Unitarian Church.

She was active in the United Nations Association, the Main Street Association, the Southeastern Community College Higher Education Association, and the Historical Preservation Society.

Ms. Neafie was elected to the Burlington City Council in 1989, and became Burlington's first female mayor in 1990. She resigned as mayor in September 1993 due to her health.

She graduated from Burlington High School in 1949 and from Burlington Junior College in 1951. She received a bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from the University of Iowa in 1958 and a master of arts degree from the UI in 1971.

Survivors include two sisters, Linda Lozano of Burlington and Pamela Neafie of Galesburg, Ill.; seven nieces; one nephew; one great-niece; three great-nephews; and a large extended family of loved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be after 8 a.m. Monday and Tuesday at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 5 p.m., and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The funeral for Ms. Neafie will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the First Congregational Church with the Rev. William Trump, Dr. Robert Dodder and the Rev. Allen Eagley officiating. Burial will be in the Bonaparte Cemetery in Bonaparte at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established to the Southeastern Community College Nancy Neafie Scholarship Fund.
