Ila M. Schachel, 74, died at noon Wednesday, June 3, 1992 at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Born Nov. 6, 1917, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Ellis and Alice Timmerman Hale. On Sept. 3, 1949, she married Fritz Petty in Davenport. He preceded her in death. She then married W. A. "Sonny" Schachel on April 19, 1980, in Kahoka, Mo.

She was a homemaker and member of the Denmark United Congregational Church of Christ, Diamond Chapter No. 37 Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Bev Mercer of Oakville and Sally Jo Petty of Texarkana, Ark.; three stepdaughters, Terry Hein of Mentor, Ohio, Cyndee Wenke of Wever and Cristi Rice of Fort Madison; one stepson, Larry Petty of Fort Madison; two brothers, Max Hale of Hurst, Texas, and Stan Hale of Cottonwood, Minn; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her first husband, she was preceded in death by one sister.

The body of Mrs. Schachel has been cremated. Private comittal (committal) services have been conducted.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Denmark United Congregational Church of Christ.
