Fred W. Lucas

Fred W. Lucas, 83, died Wednesday at 11 p.m. at his farm home 6 miles Northwest of Burlington on Highway 61 after being in failing health for a year. He had been blind for 27 years as a result of a farm accident.

He was born July 4, 1865, in Germany, the son of Christ and Maria Schulze Lucas and came to the U.S. with his parents when he was two. He had lived his entire life on the farm where he died. On May 14, 1896, he married Ida Laue in Burlington. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical & Reformed church.

Surviving are the widow; two daughters and three sons all of Des Moines county, Mrs. Selma Drebenstedt, Mrs. Esther Hummer, Clarence, Harry, and Rudolph; 24 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. His parents, two brothers and two sisters are dead.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul Evangelical & Reformed church, West Burlington. Rev. Ralph Hunger will officiate. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery in Flint River township. The body will remain at the Fry funeral home, Mediapolis until time for services.
