Harold Samuel Burgus, 81, of Burlington, died at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2001, at his home.

Born March 5, 1920, in Sperry, he was the son of Herbert C. and Daisy E. Marshall Burgus. On March 20, 1952, he married Jean Rowe in Grandview.

Mr. Burgus sold International Harvester for Burlington Farm Machinery for 41 years. He retired in 1984.

He grew up in the Sperry and Huron areas and was a 1937 graduate of Sperry High School. He was a World War II Army veteran, where he served in the Southwest Pacific with Company D 186th Infantry 41st Division during his four years in the military. He was a member of First Congregational Church, Senior Choir, Mission Board of his church and American Legion Post 0243 of Mediapolis. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and was an avid fisherman and conservationist. He enjoyed the Army reunions and organizing their regional meetings.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Gail Burnett of Anaheim, California, and Carolyn Nelson of Mount Pleasant; one son, Randall Burgus of Burlington; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, LaVera Gerst of Yarmouth and Pauline Kester of rural Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will begin after noon Friday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Burgus will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church, with the Reverend Cynthia Bacon officiating. Burial with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Marine Corps League will be in Kossuth Cemetery in Mediapolis.

A memorial has been established for First Congregational Church.
