Mrs. Betty Jane Atkinson, 93, of Burlington, died at 8:07 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born April 24, 1921 in West Burlington, she was the daughter of Dewey and Anna Johnson Darnold. On May 8, 1987 she married Gary Edward Atkinson in Burlington.
Mrs. Atkinson was a homemaker, worked at St. Francis Hospital in the Laundry Department, I.A.A.P. and Elm View Care Center for 11 years, retiring in 1987.
She attended Burlington Schools and was a member of Sunnyside Avenue Baptist Church.
Betty enjoyed gardening, flowers, animals, dancing, music, traveling, cards, table games and roller skating. She was Pro Life.
Survivors include her husband, Gary of Burlington; one son, Jack (Lili) Taylor of Carman, IL; two daughters, Kathleen "Kathy" (Mark) Meyer of Milan, IL and Maryann (Tom) Stimpson of Stronghurst, IL; ten grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Robert Taylor; three brothers, Harold, Bob, and Jim; and one sister, Donna Wise.
Friends may call after 8 a.m. Wednesday, January 21st and the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Lunning Chapel
The funeral for Mrs. Atkinson will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 21st at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Larry Dodds officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. There will be a luncheon served at Sunnyside Baptist Church following the committal service.
Memorials have been established for the American Diabetes Association and Des Moines County Humane Society.
