Mrs. Larita Irene Gibbs, 75, of Burlington died at 10:04 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at Great River Medical Center - Emergency Treatment Center.
Born May 29, 1939 at rural Primrose, Iowa, she was the daughter of Carl Daniel and Hildred Irene (Shoemaker) Haffner. On July 16, 1961 she married Donald R. Gibbs at the Sharon Presbyterian Church, near Primrose.
Mrs. Gibbs was a 1957 graduate of Farmington High School. She was a real estate broker owning and operating the Gibbs Realty. Later she worked as a loan officer with West America Inc. until her retirement.
Mrs. Gibbs was of the Presbyterian faith, a member and past president of the Burlington Board of Realtors, and started RPAC, a Realtor picnic fund raiser. Mrs. Gibbs collected watches and enjoyed gardening, woodworking, camping, cooking, sewing, chair caning and painting. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and attending her children's and grandchildren's activities.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Don Gibbs of Burlington; four children, Shelly Strawhacker of Burlington, Rusty (Brenda) Gibbs of Pocahontas, Angela (John) Abbott of Burlington and Randy (Angie) Gibbs of Mt. Union; 14 grandchildren, Trenton Strawhacker, Caroline Strawhacker, Mackenzie Strawhacker, Nick Hanson, Nate Hanson, Josh Smothers, Tyler Alleman, Justin Walker, Hiliary Walker, Hannah Walker, Trevor Gibbs, Trey Gibbs, Reighan Gibbs and Bayley Gibbs; two great grandchildren, Kayson and Tod; three sisters, Geraldine Watkins of Farmington, Ramona Mills of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Wanda Wilken of Burlington; two brothers, Daniel Haffner and Joe Haffner both of Farmington; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Laura R. Gibbs; sister, Winona Mills; brother-in-law, Wendell Watkins and two sisters-in-law, Jeannie Haffner and Sandy McAree.
Friends may sign Mrs. Gibbs register book from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Friday, August 15th, at Lunning Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, August 15th, at Lunning Chapel.
The funeral service for Mrs. Gibbs will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 16th, at Lunning Chapel with Rev. David Plooster officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.
A memorial has been established in memory of Larita.
Cremation will be accorded following the funeral service and has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.
