Marcelle Ilene Brown, 84, of Burlington, died at 10:02 PM Sunday, June 1, 2014, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born October 3, 1929, in Des Moines County, she was the daughter of George W. and Alta Benkert Riemann. On March 3, 1949, she married Lloyd William Brown in Kingston. He died July 30, 1995.

Marcelle worked for IRC, Burlington Medical Center and several other places during her working years.

She was a 1948 graduate from Huron High School.

She was a member of Mediapolis United Methodist Church, former member of United Methodist Women, and a beneficial member of Eagles Auxiliary since 1975. She also was a member of Hawkeye Heritage Quilters, Red Hat Society, and the block of the month Quilt Group at Sew N Sew Shop. She enjoyed quilting and made quilts for each of her girls, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She made over 35 quilts. She also knitted Christmas stockings for every member of her family with their names and dates on them. She enjoyed embroidery and crocheting. She was an accomplished seamstress. She did a lot of alterations for family and friends. She enjoyed The Hawkeye Basketball Team, The Big Ten and the NBA Games. She also enjoyed being with her family and friends.

Survivors include three daughters, Rebecca Mehaffy, Roberta (Terry) Barngrover, and Renee (David) Gerling, all of Burlington; six grandchildren; Jill (Eric) Nalley, Nathan (Laura) Mehaffy, Jason (Renee) Barngrover, Ryan (Stephanie) Barngrover, Katie (Jeremy) Music, and Abby (Ted) Kuechmann, 10 great-grandchildren; Allison, Lily and Henry Nalley, Dane and Marin Mehaffy, Miya and Mason Barngrover, Aubrey and Alaina Music, and Carson Kuechmann; four sisters, Winona Anderson of Burlington, Velma Jean (Howard) Keitzer of Mediapolis, Doris Ann (Kenneth) Rechkemmer of Mediapolis, and Virginia (Jim) Kidder of Knoxville, IA; one brother, Don Riemann of Longmont, CO, two brother-in-laws, Elmer Springsteen of Burlington, and Marvin Miller of Mount Union, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Dorothy Springsteen and Florence Miller, and one sister-in-law, Judy Riemann.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 4, 2014.

The funeral service for Mrs. Brown will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Tracey Burgus officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

Memorials have been established for Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County, the Mediapolis United Methodist Church and Great River Hospice House.
