Verdie Dean Houtz

BURLINGTON - Former Lockridge area resident Verdie Dean Houtz, 72, of Burlington died at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 1994, at Burlington Medical Center.

Houtz was born Feb. 23, 1922, at Bardwell, Kan., the daughter of Willie and Dezzie Hill Mitchell. She graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1940 and married Quentin U. Houtz on July 3, 1941, in Fort Madison.

She had worked at IAAP for 13 years, and previously farmed in the Lockridge area. She attended First Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for 18 years at Lockridge Baptist Church. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star and had taken the Dale Carneigie Course.

Surviving are her husband of Burlington; one daughter, Deanne Jackson of Burlington; one sister, Hattie Newby of Hardy, Ark.; one brother, Henry Mitchell of Montrose; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine Young; and four brothers, Johnnie Mitchell, Denver Mitchell, Arnold Mitchell and Mike Mitchell.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, the Rev. John Wooden officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at Burlington.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel. A memorial has been established to the First Baptist Church.
