Old Citizen of Burlington Died at 11:45 Last Eve
Came to Burlington in 1851--Had Been Continually in Business on His Own Account 67 Years

"Mr. Philip Andre, one of the most widely known citizens of Burlington, and one of her oldest business men, who had been engaged in the shoe trade on his own account since 1881, a man whom everyone esteemed most highly, passed away at 11:45 o'clock last evening at his home, 232 South Eighth street. The old gentleman had been in good health and a regular visitor at the store until a short time ago, and his death was due simply to the burden of years. Having always been a man of the most regular habits he enjoyed good health until some five months ago, when he began to fail. His condition was not considered alarming, however, and the end came quite suddenly.

"P.A. Andre was born in the Duchy of Nassau, Germany, August 22, 1830 and came to the United States with his father's family in 1848. After brief sojourns in New Orleans and Louisville, the family came to Burlington and this city remained his home to the end. Here the young man soon found employment in the J.M. Caffrey shoe store, where he did so well that within five years he became a member of the firm and four years laer he purchased the Caffrey interest and became the sole owner of the business, which he conducted successfully to the present day.

"Ever polite and courteous to his customers, famous for square dealing in all transactions, a man of honor in the best sense of the word, he long occupied a high place in the business life of the city, and he prospered as men ought to prosper who do right and work hard and give their close attention to the business in hand.

"Mr. Andre was one of the oldest members of the First German _____Church and there, as everywhere that he was known, the good old man will be missed and will be held in kindly remembrance.

"In 1852 Mr. Andre was married to Miss Catherine Scheurs, a native of Albany, N.Y., who preceded him to the better land thirty-two years ago. The happy union was blessed with five children, all of whom survive the parents. They are John H., Edward and P. Henry Andre and the Misses Cora and Lydia Andre, all of this city. He also leaves a sister Miss Catherine Andre, of this city.
