Brothers Die 16 Hours Apart

John Hartman, 80, and Joseph Hartman, 86, died here 16 hours apart, John passing away Saturday evening at 5:30 o'clock and Joseph, Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock.

John Hartman

John, who was a lifelong resident of Burlington and who had apparently been in good health, died suddenly at his home, 701 Harrison avenue at 5:30 o'clock Saturday evening. He was born here Oct. 10, 1853, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hartman, natives of Germany; was a former member of the police force where he served for nine years and was a carpenter in this city for about twenty years, retiring in 1918. Mr. Hartman was a member of the Hawkeye Natives. He was married here in 1872 to Lena Christ.

Surviving are his widow; three daughters, Mrs. William Babb, Mrs. Frank Bell and Mrs. John Thomas, all of Burlington; three sons, Andy and Charles Hartman of Burlington and William Hartman of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Moehn of Middletown and Mrs. George Sulzer of Burlington; one brother, Killian Hartman of Burlington. One son preceded him in death. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Unterkircher funeral home. Burial will be in Aspen Grove cemetery.

Joseph Hartman

Joseph Hartman was born in Ohio, Dec. 17, 1846, coming to Burlington when he was a child. He was married 58 years ago to Edith Furrow, who died in April of last year. He was a retired stonemason. In addition to his widow, he is survived by five sons, Joe and William of Burlington, Arthur of Kansas City, Jesse of Carman, and Fred of Montrose, Ia.; two daughters, Mrs. Fred Franklin of Burlington and Mrs. Charles Anderson of Cicero, Ill., two sisters and one brother, 28 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at the Burnett-Wallen funeral home tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock, with burial in Aspen Grove cemetery. Rev. A. T. Browning will preside.
