Samuel H. Sater, Danville Resident, Dies in Maryland

Danville - Samuel Harlan Sater, 81 year-old, former state representative and long-time postmaster of Danville, died June 14 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Enid Ross, at Takoma Park, Md., where he and Mrs. Sater had gone last November to spend the winter.

A life resident of the Danville community, Sater was born Feb. 27, 1871, the son of Thomas J. and Phares Sater. He served in the general assembly in 1911 and 1912, and in 1935 became postmaster, a position he held until his retirement on March 1, 1950. His 15 year tenure is the longest ever attained by any Danville postmaster.

Sater was a member of the Methodist church and the Masonic lodge. He was married to Maude Gaines on Dec. 16, 1895. She survives, as do 2 daughters; Mrs. Jeanne Moehn, Silver Springs, Md., and Mrs. Ross; two grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Three brothers and one sister died previously.

Last rites will be held at the Baptist church of Danville at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Harold Olson will officiate and burial will be in Jaggar cemetery with the Masonic ritual being performed at the gravesite.

The body is at the Elliott chapel in New London.
