Russell Butts

Russell P. Butts, 81, of West Burlington, died at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at Burlington Medical Center.

Born Jan. 3, 1918, in Burlington, he was the son of Albert and Edna Russell Butts. He married Vada Utterback.

Mr. Butts was a truck driver for Watson Brother Trucking and worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for more than 20 years.

He was a World War II Army veteran, where he worked as an engineer. He was a member of First United Church of Christ, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Moose Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10102. He loved the river and fishing.

Survivors include three sons, Albert Lewis Butts of Shiner, Texas, and Joseph Michael Butts and Steven Russell Butts, both of Burlington; one daughter, Georgia Brobston of West Burlington; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Butts and Paul Butts, both of Burlington; one sister, Marjorie Bash of West Burlington; and his former wife, Vada Butts, of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.

Visitation will begin after 8 a.m. Monday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Butts will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Milo Van Veldhuizen officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162 will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Dr. A.J.'s Cancer Fund and the American Cancer Society.
