Edward Whalen, Sr.

Edward William Whalen, Sr. 69, of 222 N. Gertrude, died Sunday, Aug. 31, at 3:47 a.m. in University hospital, Iowa City.

He was born Sept. 2, 1899, in Burlington, the son of William F. and Mary Higgins Whalen. Oct. 12, 1921, he married Jennie Weineke in Burlington. Mr. Whalen was a retired machinist after working at the Burlington railroad shops for 50 years. He was a member of St. John's Catholic church, Eagles, Knights of Columbus, Railroad Veterans, Machinist Union and Senior Citizens.

Surviving: The wife; a son, Edward William, Jr., of Gladstone; two daughters, Mrs. Donall Romine of Wellman and Mrs. Gene Ibbotson of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. James Lamb of Burlington; a brother, William F. of Burlington; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services: Wednesday at 9 a.m. in St. John's Catholic church, Father Wilfred Fangman; Sacred Heart cemetery. The rasary will be recited tonight at 8 in Prugh's chapel.
