Ruth Welcher
Ruth Francis Welcher, 86, of Mount Pleasant, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at New London Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born Sept. 1, 1921, in rural Stronghurst, Ill., she was the daughter of Charles V. and Mary Cusick Charter. On Dec. 21, 1938, she married Ralph Bert "Sammy" Welcher. He died in 1982.

Mrs. Welcher worked for a time at the former Sheaffer Pen Co. in Mount Pleasant. For 25 years, she was a switchboard operator at the Mount Pleasant Mental Health Institute. She attended grade school in Stronghurst. She then moved with her family to Mount Pleasant where she attended high school.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and the Moose Lodge of Mount Pleasant. She enjoyed watching Cubs baseball. Her favorite pastime was attending auctions in the area, and she loved to go antiquing.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Allen of Mount Pleasant and Pat Osborn of West Burlington; three grandsons and six great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters, one brother, two grandsons and one granddaughter.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service on Thursday at the funeral home.

The funeral for Mrs. Welcher will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home with the Rev. Cindy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Mount Pleasant.
