James Curl
James Wesley Curl, 82, of Burlington, died at 3:35 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, at Great River Medical Center Klein Unit in Burlington.

Born Jan. 19, 1925, in Ammons, Ky., he was the son of Charles Wesley and Stella B. Barger Curl. On April 29, 1950, he married Helen Powelson in Carthage, Ill.

Mr. Curl worked in the steel industry. He served in the Army and the Air Force. He was a member of Sunnyside Avenue Baptist Church in Burlington. He volunteered at nursing homes and enjoyed woodworking.

Besides his wife, survivors include four daughters, Catherine Smyth of Burlington, Linda Mattingly of Paris, Ill., Alleta Scott of Omaha, Neb., and Diane Bates of Lone Tree; three sons, Jim Lee Curl of Hamilton, Ill., Melvin Curl of Monmouth, Ill. and Robert Curl of Norfolk, Idaho; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Prugh's Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral at the church.

The funeral for Mr. Curl will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sunnyside Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. Maurice Moore officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be in National Cemetery in Keokuk.

A memorial has been established for the Sunnyside Avenue Baptist Church.
