Beck

Mrs. Elizabeth Beck, formerly Miss Obermann, was born on the 7th of May, 1827, in Heimertshallsen, Kreis Al feld, Groszherzogum Hessen Darmstadt, Germany. Emanating from a Christian home, her parents provided for her there, religious training by letting her attend the provincial parochial school form her sixth to her fourteenth year. It was then she was confirmed according to the teachings of her master, thereby becoming a confessing member of the Evangelical Lutheran church, to whose credit it can unquestionably be said, that she remained a sincere Christian and a faithful member and supporter of her church until her blessed end. Having spent her childhood and youth in her parental home, Miss Obermann left the fatherland in 1848 at the age of 21 for America. She was welcomed by a younger brother, who had preceded her to Wheeling, West Virginia. It was here she became wedded to Mr. Henry Beck in 1849, and where she remained until 1855. A new home was then sought in Pleasant Grove township, in Des Moines County, Iowa and in 1868 the family moved to Danville township in the vicinity of Danville. Here the departed spent her remaining days. In 1901 Mrs. Beck was bereaved of her beloved husband, and since then has been making her home with her son and daughter, Mr. Fred and Miss Marie Beck, on the home place. After many years of lingering illness, Mrs. Elizabeth Beck found her eternal relief Friday noon, June 9th, having reached the grand age of 89 years, 1 month and 2 days.

Besides 19 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends, eight children, four sons, and four daughters are left to mourn. They are George Beck, Louis Beck, Fred Beck, Miss Marie Beck, and Mrs. Sherman Mathews of Danville, Iowa; Mrs. Henry Ebert, of Burlington, Mr. Charles Beck of Yarmouth, and Mrs. Edward Koenig of Tecumseh, Michigan. One child preceded the parents to the great beyond.

Mrs. Elizabeth Beck was a devoted wife, a true mother, a sincere Christian, an honorable and admirable woman, portraying those characteristics which ennoble and better this world.

Her funeral services will be conducted from the family dwelling near Danville, Sunday, June 11, at 2:15 p.m. at Prairie Grove Union Church. Interment at Prairie Grove. Rev. C.L. Ramme will conduct the services.
