Louis Dehner

Louis John Dehner, 103, of Burlington died Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Feb. 20, 1904, in Burlington, he was the son of John A. and Julia Diedrich Dehner. On Oct. 25, 1934, he married Anna Marie Marshall Burlington. She died Aug. 23, 2003.

Mr. Dehner was a graduate of St. Paul High Catholic School and attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport. Upon completion of his education, he joined his father and brothers in the operation of Dehner Seed and Supply Co. He prided himself on helping customers solve problems no matter how large or small. He remained active in the business until his retirement at age 97. He was a salesman for Pfister Hybrid Corn Co. and Cargill Seed Corn Co. For several years, he wrote "The Game Bag" for The Hawk Eye in Burlington. This column dealt with hunting and fishing tips in Burlington, including recipes for both fish and waterfowl. He was an avid sportsman enjoying duck hunting, fishing and the outdoors in general. He was an avid Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs fan. He refereed and coached basketball. He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church where he was a lector, Crystal Lake Club, Izaak Walton League and served on the Burlington Catholic School and Athletic Board. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a master gardener.

Survivors include one son, Thomas Dehner of Omaha, Neb.; five daughters, Mary Wilson and Rosemary Keeley, both of Bettendorf, Elizabeth Stevens of West Burlington, Teresa Walker of Plymouth, Minn., and Patricia Kirk of Erlanger, Ky.; 24 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, twin sons, one grandson, two great-granddaughters and four brothers.

Visitation will be after 8 a.m. Thursday in Lunning Chapel. There will be a rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a Christian wake service at 6 p.m. after which the family will receive friends until 8 p.m.

The Mass of Christian burial for Mr. Dehner will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf as celebrant. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, the Dehner Foundation at Notre Dame Schools and St. Vincent DePaul Pantry.
