Doris Shipman

Doris Elizabeth Shipman, 95, of Oakville died Monday, July 2, 2007, at her daughter's home in rural Burlington.

Born July 16, 1911, in Bard, she was the daughter of Fred and Mabel Wykert Mohlie. On Nov. 21, 1931, she married Wesley C. Shipman in Muscatine. He died Feb. 1, 1983.

Mrs. Shipman was a homemaker, seamstress and cook, who enjoyed the family farms. She and her husband lived near Wapello, moving in 1936 to farm near Oakville. She graduated from Wapello High School. She attended college in Ames for one year, studying home economics.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Oakville and Charter Member of the WSCS which is now the UMW of the church. In her recent years, she enjoyed listening to books for the blind on tape.

Survivors include one daughter, Vernette Whitaker of Burlington; two sons, Wayne Shipman of Oakville and Donn Shipman of Blackwell, Okla.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and two nieces.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son and one brother.

Visitation with family will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Oakville.

The funeral for Mrs. Shipman will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating. Burial will follow in the Wapello Cemetery.

A luncheon will be served at the Oakville Community Building following the services for family and friends.

Memorials have been established for Books for the Blind and Great River Hospice.

Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello is providing the care and arrangements.
