Alice Akey

Alice Gertrude Akey, 97, of Burlington died Sunday, June 24, 2007, at Danville Care Center in Danville.

Born April 28, 1910, in Keosauqua, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary Akey.

Ms. Akey graduated from Keosauqua High School. After high school, she taught country school for two years making 20 dollars a month. She worked as a cook at Burlington Hospital for 22 years, the YWCA and at King's Daughters Home for 21 years until 1992. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene for over 55 years. She was involved in the Nazarene International Missions and was the missionary president for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, doing cross-stitch and needlepoint. She enjoyed the children in her life the most. She was a big Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, among which are her caregivers, Kathleen Loose and Danny and Linda Watkins, all of Danville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Ms. Akey will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Leland D. Watkins officiating. Interment will be in Long Creek Cemetery, rural Danville.

A memorial has been established for First Church of the Nazarene.
