Verle Johnson

Verle Homer Johnson, 68, of Burlington, died at 2:09 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 22, 1932, in Burlington, he was the son of Rudolph Frederic and Esther Dorothy Wagner Johnson. He married Marjorie Ann Brandt on April 6, 1957, in Burlington.

Mr. Johnson was a 1950 graduate of Burlington High School and an Army veteran, serving from 1954 to 1956. He worked as an engineer at Shaeffer Pen Co. in Fort Madison for 25 years and had formerly worked at Murray Iron Works and Champion Spark Plug.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and recently attended Grace Bible Church in Wever. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, his grandchildren, camping and traveling. His home was well known for its beautiful holiday lighting near the Skunk River bridge.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Steven Wayne Johnson of Center Point; two daughters, Cynthia Lynn Gregory of Greenfield, Ind., and Lori Beth Minson of Norwalk; four grandchildren; and one sister, Verda Jean Baird of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The funeral for Mr. Johnson will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Lunning Chapel, with Byron Shanks officiating. Burial will be in South Walker Cemetery, Burlington.

Memorials have been established for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.
