Eugene Baker

Eugene Lawrence Baker, 87, of Danville, formerly of Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Danville Care Center.

Born March 4, 1918, in Louisa, Ky., he was the son of G.C. and Clara Amburgey Baker. On Oct. 8, 1955, he married Bonnie Lyon in Paducah, Ky.

Mr. Baker worked for Mason & Hanger as a safety engineer, retiring in 1983.

He was a 1936 graduate of Bristol High School and attended the University of Tennessee. He was a member of Danville United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening, music and swing dancing to big band music, reading, science and nature.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Larry "Gene" Baker of Burlington and Joe Baker of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; one daughter, Patricia Baranov of Homosassa, Fla.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Hodgson of Bristol, Va.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville United Methodist Church, where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m.

The funeral for Mr. Baker will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Patton officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery in rural Danville.

Memorials have been established for Danville United Methodist Church and Danville Rescue Unit.

Elliott Chapel in New London is in charge of arrangements.
