Arnold N. Merkes, 86, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family. Visitation for Arnold will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2022, with a Scripture Service beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2022, with an Additional Visitation from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Reverend Gabriel Anderson officiating. Livestream of Arnolds’s Funeral Mass may be viewed at https://blessedtrinitycluster.com/livestream-mass. Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Manchester. Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester is in charge of arrangements.

Arnold was born on August 24, 1935, in Dubuque County, Iowa, the son of Peter and Margaret (Ries) Merkes. Arnold met the love of his life in the summer of 1958, at a dance in Worthington, Iowa. He married Jacqueline “Jackie” Werner on October 27, 1959, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Sand Springs, Iowa; six children were born into this union. Arnold was a very faithful man who worked hard to provide for his family. He worked various jobs throughout his life at the Hide Service, Riverside Paving, Lawn Care and Hog House Antiques. He enjoyed doing word puzzles, playing solitaire and connect 4, going to dances. He loved spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Arnold is survived by his children, Nancy Merkes, Marcia (Lee Knutson) Nefzger, Amy (Dan) Hahesy, Daryl (Linda) Merkes, Jennifer (Rodney) Ingles, Jon (Jenni) Merkes, Carl (Heather) Munson, Scott (Cher) Delperdang and Michelle (Ben) Recker; grandchildren, Brandi (Mike) Nefzger, Shari (Garrett) Soppe, Samantha (Cody "Juice") Christen, Tyler Ingles, Amber (Connor) Koth, Cody (Staci) Hahesy, Emma Merkes, Carter Knutson, Hallie Knutson, Gwen (Michael) Luton, Matt (Kayla) Kremer; great-grandchildren, Quinn, Finley, Graham, Griffin, Arrissa, Pacey, Jessa, Hadley, Raven, Octavia, Athena, Maize, Rhett, Colson, Lucas, Nora, Reylan, Blake, Hayden, Izzy, Javari; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Ed Werner, Bob (Cheryl) Werner, Susan (Ron) McDermott, Richard Werner, Marilyn Werner, Linda Werner, Beth (Edwin) Whisler, Theresa Merkes, Joel Glennon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Margaret (Ries) Merkes; wife Jackie in January 2022; siblings, Catherine (Joe) Foxen, Clara (Melvin) Weis, Ambrose (Sylvia) Merkes, Art (Dorothy) Merkes, Theresa (Leonard) Foxen, Pete (Yvonne) Merkes, Al Merkes, John (Lucille) Merkes, Mary Jane Glennon, Sue Werner; brothers and sister-in-law, Daniel Werner, Pat Werner, Steve Werner and Janet (Dave) Mescher .

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Care Initiatives Hospice for the love shown to Arnold and his family.
