David Wayne Lawson, 70, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, after a valiant fight against cancer. Beloved son, husband, father and friend, Dave spent his life loving his family and befriending everyone he met. He was born on May 29, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Clifford and Agnes (Stepanek) Lawson. Dave was raised in Dundee and graduated from Manchester High School. He later attended Waldorf College in Forest City.

On February 19, 1971, Dave was united in marriage to the love of his life, Sandra Hackbarth, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. They had two children, Todd and Angela. Dave was a loving and caring husband and proud father. He enjoyed making Sunday breakfast, visiting family, and taking road trips. He could always be counted upon for a joke or a laugh or caring advice. He especially loved all children and spent many a holiday spreading cheer as Santa Claus. Dave was an amazing and doting grandfather.

Dave worked as a foreman at Harnischfeger in Cedar Rapids for many years. He was able to enjoy working with his father and later his brothers-in-law and good friends. Dave then worked as an insurance agent for Farm Bureau Insurance for 25 years and most recently had been with Neighbor Insurance. Throughout his work, Dave most enjoyed connecting, talking, and laughing with the families he served and his coworkers.

Dave is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandra Lawson of Manchester; his son, Todd (Trish) Lawson of Cascade; his daughter, Angela (Ryan) Wicks of Manchester; one granddaughter, Brynnlee Wicks; four siblings, Clifford (Luella) Lawson of Dundee, Chuck (Angi) Lawson of Garnavillo, Donald (Linda) Lawson of Delhi, and Mary (Stan) Pfoff of Cedar Rapids; his mother-in-law, Viola Hackbarth of Manchester; brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Steve (Barb) Hackbarth of Manchester, Julie (Mark) Timmons of Manchester, and Bob (Julie) Hackbarth of Colesburg; and many nieces and nephews.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Arthur Hackbarth; one sister, Martha Lawson; and his grandson, Ronnie.
