On June 4, 2020, Walter Croskey, 96, left us to join his fallen shipmates who served aboard the U.S.S. Otter DE210. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 and served aboard the Otter until 1946. His Tours of Duty included the European, African, Middle Eastern, and North Atlantic campaigns. He was a very proud sailor and served his country well.

After returning home, Walter enrolled at Iowa State College and received his B.S. in Architectural Engineering. He married Genevieve Barr on October 24, 1947. They made their home in Waterloo, Iowa, where Walter established his building company. They resided there for 45 years and moved to Lake Delhi where they have enjoyed their retirement years.

Walter loved the outdoors and enjoyed his annual Canadian fishing trips, along with hunting trips. He and Genny enjoyed many cruises; his favorite was a trip through the Panama Canal and a journey on the Amazon River. Walter was a past member of the Elks Lodge and the El Kahir shrine, a 50-year member of the American Legion in Waterloo and present member of the Manchester Masonic Lodge #165.

Walter was born to Ernest and Amy Topliff Croskey on February 23, 1924, in Manchester. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; three children, Kent, Tim, and Holly; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild on the way; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and one brother, Vivian (Bill) Helgen, Roberta (Russell) Zehr, Earl (Lucille) and (Louise) Croskey, Betty (Omer) Brewster.

He was a dedicated and generous husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by everyone. As per Walter’s wishes he has donated his body to the Deed Program at the University Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. There will be no services at this time.

A special thank you goes to Above & Beyond Hospice, Regional Home Care, very special friend, Janie, the many nurses and aids that have taken care of Walter over the years. The care he received is much appreciated by his family.
