Almon C. Fliehler (1920-2020)

Almon C. “Al” Fliehler, 99, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, formerly of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2020, at the Western Home in Cedar Falls. He was born in Strawberry Point, on March 14, 1920, the son of Henry M. and Cassy (Hughes) Fliehler. Al attended school at Strawberry Point and was a 1938 graduate of Strawberry Point High School.

On January 6, 1942, Al enlisted in the United States Army and was first stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, and then as part of the Chemical Warfare Detachment of the task force that occupied Adak Island in the Alaskan chain of islands for 27 months. Al was then assigned to Fort Devens, Massachusetts, as a prisoner-of-war escort guard and was honorably discharged from there at the end of WWII.

While on furlough, Al and Marian Westendorf were united in marriage on June 15, 1943, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point. From this marriage, Al and Marian had three children, Susan, Sheryl, and Richard. Al was baptized in Adak, Alaska, on August 22, 1943, by Lutheran Chaplin Olaf C. Helland while serving in the Army.

Al was employed at McCarron’s Store, Goodrich Produce, Frederick Hardware. He owned and operated the Shell Gas station and Tank Truck for 20 years. Al was a partner in the Fliehler Insurance Agency and eventually took over full ownership of the Insurance Agency.

On September 7, 1991, Al married Charlotte (Muller) Fritz and spent 12 wonderful years together.

Al was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post #218, Masonic Lodge, Cedar Rapids Consistory for which he was honored with the designation of Knights Commander Court of Honor, the El Kahir Shrine, Strawberry Point Chapter #86 of the Eastern Star, Strawberry Point Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Civic Center Board, Clayton County Zoning Board and was a 20-year member of the Strawberry Point Fire Department. Al’s interests included fishing, hunting, golfing, and traveling. He was also an avid cribbage player. Al loved his family and enjoyed being with family and friends.

Survivors include his three children, Susan (Robert) Nagy, Sheryl (Jim) Freeman, and Richard (Jacquelin) Fliehler; two stepchildren, Barbara (Richard) Herzmann and James (Marianne) Fritz; two grandchildren, Laura (Josh) Rank and David (Siri) Fliehler; a grandson-in-law, Paul Skau; two step-grandchildren, Daryl (Liz) Herzmann and Matthew (Liz) Herzmann; nine great-grandchildren, Jordan, Kyle, and Morgan Skau, Harper, Charlie, Anna, and Declan Rank, and Sage and Chase Fliehler; and five step-great-grandchildren, Carson and Madeline Herzmann, and Maggie, Robert, and Charlotte Herzmann.

Al was proceeded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marian; his sister, Emogene Clochessy; two brothers, Raymond and Jack; his second wife, Charlotte; and one granddaughter Cassy Skau.
