Mrs. Mary Henrietta Van Kuren was born in Venango County, Pa., May 19th, 1838, and passed away at the home of her niece, Mrs. Jacob Schwager in this city on January 22, 1921. She was the daughter of John and Catherine Walters and spent the greater part of her early life in state of Ohio. In 1856 she came with her parents to Iowa and located at Delhi. In 1860 she was united in marriage to Mr. John Van Kuren. Their family consisted of one son who died at the age of eight years. The husband died in 1863, from wounds received in an engagement during the Civil War, his body being buried in a southern grave. For a time Mrs. Van Kuren lived at Forestville and while there held the position of postmistress. In 1876 she came to Manchester has made her home here since. During the later years of her life she has made her home with her niece, who gave her the best of care.

Mrs. Van Kuren is survived by one sister, Mrs. Marion DuBois, of Edgewood and by the following nieces and nephews; Mrs. Jacob Schwager, of this city; Mrs. Alice Walters of Waterloo; Mrs. Grace Millard, of Montour, Iowa; Charles Walters of Kansas City, Mo.; and Mrs. B. J. Davis of Edgewood.
