Last Wednesday morning word passed rapidly from one to another and it was not long till everyone in Manchester knew that Dr. Abbott was dead. Although not unexpected, his death brought a shade of sadness to every face, for J. T. Abbott was everybody's friend.

Deceased was born in Cortland County, New York, January 2, 1824 and was well along in his 76th year. He was a graduate of the Courtland Academy, of Homer, New York, and after leaving school was variously engaged for sometime, but finally chose dentistry for a life work. He commenced the practice of his profession in Cumberland, Maryland, but moved from there to Fabius, New York, in 1861. In 1864 he entered the union army as a member of the 185th New York volunteer infantry, and was captain of Company 1, of that regiment during the entire term of its service, and was discharged as brevet major.

In June 1808 he came to Manchester where he has continuously resided ever since.

On January 24th 1850 he married Miss Frances Parmalee, who bore him companionship during the rest of his life and now survives him, with their two children, Charles C. Abbott, of this place and Frank T. Abbott of Greenwood, B.C.

Deceased occupied a front rank in dental circles and Odd Fellowship in the state. He was for a time president of the State Board of Dental Examiners, and a member of the dental faculty of the State University; and in 1883-1884 be was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows, of Iowa and at the time of his death was brigadier general of the 3rd brigade Department of Iowa, Patriarchs Militant. He was also mayor of Manchester for three years and gave the city a commendable administration.

The funeral was held at his late residence at 2 p.m. Sunday. Rev. H. W. Tuttle of the Congregational church, preached the sermon.
It is estimated that no less than a thousand people followed the remains to the cemetery, where the burial services were conducted according to the ritual of the Order of Oddfellows.
