Joyce (Clifton) Gearhart 1934-2001

Joyce Gearhart, 66, died Saturday evening, May 19, 2001, in her home after a lengthy illness. Services: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, First United Church-Methodist Center, Hopkinton, by the Rev. Martha Montovani. Burial: Fairview Cemetery, Earlville. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Clifton Funeral Home, Earlville, and one hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Joyce, the daughter of Francis and Gladys Long Clifton, was born July 24, 1934, in Earlville. She graduated from Earlville High School in 1951, received her teacher's certificate in 1953 from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and signed her first teaching contract with the Hopkinton shool when she was 18. She married William Gearhart on March 24, 1955, and they made their home on the family farm near Hopkinton. She continued her education and received her Bachelor of Science degree from UNI. After many years of teaching in Hopkinton, Buck Creek and Maquoketa Valley school district at the Earlville and Hopkinton centers, she retired four years ago.

She served on the Hopkinton Library Board, was secretary treasurer of Union Township Trustees for many years and was a member of the Cleo Club, Kensington Club and Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed reading, taking care of her flowers and especially spending time with her family and friends.

Surviving, besides her husband, are three sons, Clif (Deb) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Andy (Martha) of Delhi and Rob (Laura) of Coggon; five grandchildren, Chris of Palm Beach Gardens, Melissa of Waterloo, Michael of Delhi and Ryan and Jenna of Coggon; four siblings, John (Lucille) Clifton of Arlington Heights, Ill., Eleanor Cambruzzi of Whittier, Calif., Ruth (Melvin) Miller of Burlington and Jim (Connie) Clifton of Earlville; plus several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers in infancy.

A Joyce Gearhart Memorial Fund has been established.
