Ethel I. Sundermeyer, 88, of Delaware, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 02, 2006, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, Iowa, after a long illness.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Delaware, with Rev. Dale Critchley officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Earlville.

Ethel was born on October 20, 1917, near Oneida, Iowa, the daughter of Fred & Emma [Glanz] Scovel.

She graduated in 1935 from the Oneida High School. Ethel worked in a print shop and as a waitress at the Glen Charles Restaurant in Manchester.

On June 20, 1940, Ethel was united in marriage to Martin A. Sundermeyer at St. Paul,s Lutheran Church in Delaware.

The couple lived and farmed near Delaware. Ethel worked for a time as a clerk for E.M. Hughes Dry Goods in Manchester. The couple retired and moved to the town of Delaware in 1972. Martin passed away on March 27, 1986. Ethel continued to live in their home until her health required her to move to the Good Neighbor Home in June of 1998.

Ethel was a member of St. Paul,s Lutheran Church in Delaware. She enjoyed cooking, bowling, embroidering, reading and watching the Iowa Hawkeye sports especially basketball. Ethel loved spending time with her family and her grandchildren.

Ethel is survived by her two sons and their wives, Richard & Linda Sundermeyer of Marion and Roger & Charlotte Sundermeyer of Center Point; eight grandchildren, Janice Lumsden, Jill Wilson, Jim Sundermeyer, Allan Sundermeyer, Amy Manning, Eric Sundermeyer, Chad Sundermeyer and Dyan Ausborn; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Scovel of Charlotte, NC; a daughter-in-law, Becky Tiser of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Georgia Wilson of Sierra Vista, AZ; and a brother-in-law, Don Binning of Denison, Iowa.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, Fred & Emma Scovel; her husband, Martin A. Sundermeyer; a son, Merlyn Sundermeyer; four brothers, Clyde Sr., Fred, Leon, and infant Wayne Scovel; two sisters, Grace Zobel and Emma Binning.

The family suggests memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Delaware.
